Background

The September 11th Targets, and Their Defense

The targets of the September 11th attacks aside from the four jetliners, were some of the most famous and unique buildings in the world:

The World Trade Center towers
The Pentagon

These were only the focal points of the attack. The real target of the attack appears to have been something much broader and far-reaching than mere buildings, and even the thousands of innocent victims in the buildings and airplanes. Whatever the motives of the perpetrators of the attack, lower Manhattan, a section of the Pentagon, and four jetliners were the immediate physical targets.

The World Trade Center was a collection of seven buildings in lower Manhattan, including the famous Twin Towers, which were once the world's tallest buildings. By the end of September 11th, 2001, all seven buildings were either leveled or severely damaged and gutted, including Building 7, which was on a separate block.

The Pentagon is the administrative heart of the U.S. military establishment and the largest office building in the world. On September 11th, one of 10 sections was damaged in the attack.

The cities and military installations in the United States are normally defended from airborne attack of any type by NORAD, which monitors all air traffic in North America in real time, and rapidly dispatches interceptors whenever there is a flight emergency. The World Trade Center and the Pentagon would normally be two of the best defended buildings in the world.

Attack Warnings

People Who Avoided the Airlines and the Twin Towers

Much has been reported about how warnings of attacks by Muslim extremists in the year leading up to 9/11/01 were ignored. So far no official has been fired or otherwise punished for his or her failure to act on such information.

What is more informative than who failed to act on a tip, is who acted on a tip. A number of people apparently knew to stay clear of the World Trade Center on September 11th, 2001.

Government Officials and Business Leaders

There is evidence that a group of Pentagon officials was warned to avoid the attack targets. Newsweek reported:

Three weeks ago there was another warning that a terrorist strike might be imminent - On September 10, Newsweek has learned, a group of top Pentagon officials suddenly cancelled travel plans for the next morning, apparently because of security concerns. ¹

A number of business leaders who would normally have been in the World Trade Center, were instead at a meeting hosted by Warren Buffett on September 11th at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, Nebraska. That group included Anne Tatlock, CEO of Fiduciary Trust Inc., a company that occupied five floors on or above the 90th floor of the South Tower. ² ³ (This is the same Air Force Base that George W. Bush would fly to later that day. It has an underground command center.) ⁴

San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown admitted to having received a warning from what he described as his airport security late Monday evening, just hours before the attack. ⁵

Salman Rushdie, who is under the continuous protection of Scotland Yard, was prevented from flying on September 11th, 2001. ⁶

On 9/11/01, Jim Pierce, cousin of President Bush, was scheduled to attend a conference on the 105th floor of the South Tower, where his company's New York offices were based. But the conference was moved across the street to the Millennium Hotel, because, the story goes, the group was too large. ⁷

Privileged Companies

Another group of people that received warnings in advance of the attack were employees of Odigo, the instant messaging service. Two employees received e-mail messages two hours before the first World Trade Center assault, predicting the attack. ⁸

According to reporter Christopher Bollyn, Zim American Israeli Shipping Co. broke a lease in order to vacate the World Trade Center just days before the attack. Bollyn's source claims that Zim's lease extended through the end of the year and that the termination cost $50,000. ⁹

The company heading a consortium that had just obtained a 99-year lease on the World Trade Center was supposedly spared by a last-minute cancellation. According to the New York Times, Silverstein Properties had planned to meet on 9/11/01 on the 88th floor of one of the towers to "discuss what to do in the event of a terrorist attack," but cancelled the meeting Monday night "because one participant could not attend." ¹⁰

The Aftermath

The Official Response to the Attack

The aftershocks of the attack began immediately and continue to reverberate. So did its exploitation, primarily as a pretext for wholesale violations of civil liberties, the disappearance of government accountability, and a series of invasions of Central and West Asian countries.

On the day of the attack the television networks suspended normal programming and began wall-to-wall 24-hour "coverage" that would last a week, filling out the script of Osama bin Laden as mastermind of the attack with lots of background stories about Islamic terror. The networks' coverage of Ground Zero was framed almost exclusively as a human interest story of the tragedy of lost life and the rescue operation that soldiered on with "hope against hope." Questions about the plausibility of the official explanation of the collapses and about what officials were doing with the evidence of this vast crime went unasked.

On September 13th the White House announced that there was "overwhelming evidence" that bin Laden was behind the attacks. ¹

Shutdowns and Evacuations

Evacuations of large buildings in major cities around the nation started soon after the towers in New York started crumbling. This clearly helped to bolster the psychological impact of the attack.

A shutdown in civil aviation went into effect on the morning of September 11th. Takeoffs were forbidden, and all aircraft in the air were ordered to land, in most cases at airports that were not their destinations. Starting September 13th certain charter jets were quietly allowed to fly, picking up members of the bin Laden family and spiriting them out of the country.

Legislation

The Bush Administration submitted the 342-page USA PATRIOT Act to Congress on September 24th, 2001, just 13 days after the attack. Other legislation would follow, but most of the policies enacted in the name of the War on Terror would be accomplished through executive orders. Two Senators who attempted to slow the passage of the PATRIOT Act received letters containing Anthax.

The Evidence

Destroyed, Missing, and Surviving Evidence of the September 11th Attack

Evidence about the September 11th attacks can be divided into three categories: destroyed, missing, and surviving. The missing category includes officially secret information, since the existence of secret evidence and what it indicates cannot be verified.

A great deal of the evidence about the crimes of September 11th has either been destroyed or is unaccounted for. Indeed the event was and continues to be used to justify a campaign of secrecy never before seen in the United States, virtually eliminating public accountability of the very agencies who were entrusted to handle the evidence.

A review of the evidence shows a strong pattern of destruction or suppression of evidence, and the blocking of effective investigations, by the authorities. This is evident whether one looks at the flights, the World Trade Center, or the Pentagon.

Evidence Timeline

While a full accounting of the destruction of evidence from the attack would fill a volume were it ever to be told, the significant releases of evidence are few enough to be easily chronicled.

March, 2002: Five frames of video from a Pentagon security camera were leaked, feeding the no-Boeing theory of the Pentagon attack. Signs of forgery suggest that the frames were actually bait, intended to derail independent inquiry with red herrings.
May, 2002: Publication of FEMA's World Trade Center Building Performance Study provided evidence of a systematic effort to conceal and misrepresent the construction of the Twin Towers, while at the same time disclosing in its Appendix evidence suggestive of explosives.
November, 2002: Contents of suppressed audiotape of communications from Chief Oreo Palmer, a firefighter who reached the crash zone of the South Tower, were released.
August, 2003: Publication of the book Behind the Scenes: GROUND ZERO revealed New York City firefighter Nicholas DeMasi's account of the recovery of three of the four black boxes from the planes that crashed into the Twin Towers -- an account not acknowledged by the 9/11 Commission.
July 22, 2004: The Kean Commission published the 9/11 Commission Report , whose demonstrable falsehoods, omissions, contradictions, and changed timelines demonstrate a systematic cover-up.
August 12, 2005: New York Times announced the release of oral histories long suppressed by the New York City government.
June, 2005: NIST released the draft of its final report on the collapses of the Twin Towers. NIST's blatant evasion of its stated objective to "determine why and how WTC 1 and WTC 2 collapsed following the initial impacts of the aircraft" amounts to a de facto admission that the Towers did not collapse because of the impacts and fires.
May 16, 2006: The Department of Defense released videos from two Pentagon security cameras.
July, 2006: exhibits of the trial of Zacarias Moussaoui were published. They include a diagram of the location of Pentagon attack victims, and copies passenger lists for and detailed accounts of phone calls from the four commandeered jetliners.
August 11, 2006: The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released full transcripts of the air traffic control recordings from the four flights commandered on 9/11/01. A set of eight NTSB documents were published by the National Security Archive on the gwu.edu website. ¹ The transcripts include altitude profiles and ground track maps for all of the flights except United Flight 93.

On the day of the attack, details about the alleged perpetrators emerged with a rapidity that is remarkable given the assertions by high-ranking administration officials that no one had ever considered that an attacker could fly planes into buildings. Within hours the identities of several of the alleged hijackers were known, and Osama bin Laden was being presented as the prime suspect. Within three days the FBI published the identities of all the alleged hijackers. It was being presented as an open-and-shut case.

Maintaining the Official Story in the Face of Glaring Contradictions

Ensuring the success of the official story of 9/11/01 despite the long sequence of highly improbable events it supposes required that people not pay too much attention to the details. This would be ensured by the "shock and awe" of the attack itself combined with an intense propaganda campaign to sell the official story. Ironically, the vast majority of those who created and promoted that propaganda probably did so innocently, never questioning the official version of events. The idea that the entire attack was an inside job was simply too unthinkable for most Americans to consider.

The use of disinformation and diversion to manipulate public opinion is a highly developed art. It is well understood not only by psychological operations experts in the national security establishment, but also by marketing and public relations wizards. With the engineering of public reaction to September 11, disinformation has been used with a sophistication and depth that is historically unprecedented. A key tool in this modern form of psychological warfare is the "meme" -- an idea that acts like an infectious agent to spread itself through a population. Through careful construction of memes, the perpetrators could depend on others to unwittingly promote their cover story and conceal the truth. Their disinformation strategy was twofold. First, they would sell the official story to the masses through the compliant mass media, relying on people's desire to believe the official story. Second, they would seed specious ideas in the community of "9/11 skeptics" in order to distract and discredit them.

The Official Story of September 11, and Its Apologists

Academics helped to explain the collapses of the Twin Towers in articles in respected publications. Just two days after the attack, a scientific paper purported to fully explain the unprecedented engineering failures using "elastic dynamic analysis." "Why Did the World Trade Center Collapse? - Simple Analysis" was published in the Journal of Engineering Mechanics ASCE on 9/13/01. Peer review of this paper and of other theories volunteering to explain the collapses was conspicuously absent.

The mass media were consistent in avoiding asking the most obvious questions. Why did the air defense network fail to respond? Why did Flight 77 target the recently-fortified, mostly empty portion of the Pentagon? Why was the Ground Zero steel removed and destroyed as fast as possible? The media shirked their public service obligation of acting as watchdogs of the government, and instead became cheerleaders for the administration's war plans for central Asia.

The vast body of print reportage about September 11 attack is notable for an abundance of contradictions. The timelines in the Complete 9-11 Timeline series reveal numerous inconsistencies, such as between reported times of events. These discrepancies, combined with the lack of evidence, discourage investigation of facts of the attack. Meanwhile, the impending attack on Afghanistan, the alleged Islam-terror link, and "homeland security" got the attention.

This section examines just a few of the elements of the official story of September 11 with a skeptical view and attention to contradictions.

Red Flags: People are able to accept theories blessed by government and mainstream media, despite inconsistencies and long series of improbable coincidences.
Cover Stories: The top four in command of our defense go about routine appointments for an hour as the attack unfolds.
Experts on Parade: Experts "explain" the collapses of the World Trade Center buildings.

Disinformation Targeting the Skeptics

Disinformation aimed at skeptics of the official story is more subtle than the simple promotion of that story to the masses. It may consist of ideas with no basis in evidence packaged as shocking new findings that supposedly prove the involvement of insiders. Its effect is to discredit the larger body of 9/11 research through guilt by association with its sensational and unscientific approach. An example is the idea that Twin Towers were not hit by Flights 11 or 175 but rather by completely different objects, such as military planes with missile-firing pods. What Really Happened on September 11th?

September 11th, 2001 is widely considered one of the most important days in American history. Although it is arguable how much really has changed since that day, references to it as the "event that changed everything" are ubiquitous, particularly among apologists for the theft of civil liberties, vanishing government accountability, and international aggression. ¹ ² ³ ⁴

Given the importance of September 11th, the many unexplained events of that day have received an incredibly scant amount of serious scrutiny. Investigations have been unfunded and severely limited. Mainstream media simply glossed over the slow-motion response by the nation's air defense system, the inexplicable crumbling of three skyscrapers, and absurdities in the Pentagon strike story. Media did cover intelligence failure stories, thereby avoiding the central issues.

The normal procedure to discover the truth about any crime involves asking these two questions.

Who benefited from the crime?
Who had the capacity to carry out the crime?

Every legitimate investigation of a crime asks these questions. Answers are used to obtain a list of suspects. These questions were not publicly asked following the attack. Instead, one suspect was provided on the day of the attack, and no other suspects were ever considered.
